An invitation-only dinner event as part of Dani Admiss & Luiza Prado's commission The World is a Mill.
Sharing food across the table, attendees learned about recipes in common, shared stories of migration and of coming home. This was an opportunity for artists, growers, and our local community to make connections.
This was a pilot banquet bringing together 30 East Midlands diaspora artists, growers & cooks. The meal was a success. We shared our cooking experiences, began to compare how family recipes adapted as we migrated, & touched on how recipes are a carrier of knowledge, culture & kin over centuries. Drawing on Ursula K Le Guinn’s essay (1988), the pilot taught us that recipes are a “carrier bag”, they are vital repositories of migrant culture, and migrating knowledge creates conditions of regeneration. The group were highly engaged and eager to continue.
