Public Domestic: Lessons on Living

In the spring of 2013 artist Emma Smith was invited by Radar to create Public Domestic: Lessons on Living, an interdisciplinary project which explored the domestic environments of university life as spaces of exchange and knowledge production. The commission arose out of conversations with academics from the University’s Social Sciences department and the Design School, who were engaged in research into visual and experimental ethnography. The lead academic partners on the project were Kerstin Leder Mackley, a Research Associate in the Department of Social Sciences; and her departmental colleague Sarah Pink, a sensory ethnographer. The project also involved input from a core group of students who helped to conceive a programme of evening classes.
