Jason Allen-Paisant

Jason Allen-Paisant, a black man with short black hair in his 30s-40s, stands with his arms crossed, in front of stone steps. He is wearing a bright multi-coloured suit jacket and white buttoned shirt.

Jason Allen-Paisant's collection of poetry Thinking With Trees (Carcanet, 2021) evokes two landscapes; the forests near Allen-Paisant’s home in Leeds, a “land / of Karrimor jackets" far removed from rural Jamaica of his childhood. Reflecting on what it is to be a Black male in the English countryside and within the tradition of pastoral nature writing, the book also concerns the ways language and grammar construct our relationship with ‘the natural’. For his Visiting Artist commission, Radar has invited Jason to host a writing workshop in a (soon to be established) woodland location, which is a new way of working for him. This commission is a collaboration with the Forestry England Contemporary Art Programme.
